...VESSEL EXAMINATIONS...

THE FOLLOWING IS A SAFE BOATING MESSAGE FROM THE UNITED STATES COAST GUARD AUXILIARY SHALLOTTE CALABASH

First of all, your local Coast Guard Auxiliary or Power Squadron will examine your vessel for FREE! Hundreds of men and women are concerned about your safety on the water, so they volunteer their time to examine your vessel's safety features. Before you ask them to examine your vessel do the following:

1) Check your Life Jackets (PFD's). Make sure they are USCG approved, in good and serviceable condition, and accessible. Make sure there is one for each person up to the maximum capacity of the boat.
2) Check the expiration date on the Visual Distress Signals (Must not be expired).
3) Check that there are adequate fire extinguishers, and they are charged.
4) Check that the sound producing device works (horns or whistles).
5) Make sure the vessel's navigation lights are in working order.
6) Make sure the dewatering device is working.
7) Make sure the ventilation devices are working.
8) Make sure the vessel registration numbers are displayed properly, and the latest registration stickers are attached.
9) Locate the registration document.
10) North Carolina and South Carolina require the vessel have an anchor with the proper size line.

So I have checked all these items. Why should I have my vessel examined? Because these people are experts trained to spot things that you may have overlooked. They will also give you safe boating tips, answer questions and even offer Safe Boating Classes.

Take a few moments to check things before you leave the dock, not just the equipment, but the sea conditions and weather forecast. You don't want to be surprised when you get on the water; it can be very costly both in dollars and lives.
