Additional notes
Several signs of drought stress to corn are
displayed in this photo. Stressed fields such as this one usually
have lighter, sandy soils when starved of moisture. Also several
stalks have shown stunted growth, and others are beginning to turn brown
over halfway up the plant.
Southern Ohio continues to be plagued with
much-below average rainfall for most of 2007. Recent heavy rains
across the Ohio Valley have generally missed most of far southern Ohio. Currently, the
U.S. Drought
Monitor has classified much of southern and western Ohio as D1, or moderate drought.
Portions of far southern Ohio, including Clermont County, have been
classified as D2, or severe drought. D2 conditions extend
southward into Kentucky where conditions worsen to D3, or extreme
drought.
