Additional notes
The anvil clouds in the background are from severe storms near
Chillicothe, Ohio (about 90 miles from the photographer). The
towering cumulus clouds in the foreground are developing showers much
closer to the photographer.
Anvil clouds form when a rising updraft encounters warm air
aloft and reaches a "lid". This causes the updraft to cease rising
and the air fans out. Anvils are signs of a mature thunderstorm.
In this photo, the anvil has ragged edges which implies the updraft may
have weakened. An anvil with well-defined edges suggests the
updraft is still going strong.
