Anvil clouds form when a rising updraft encounters warm air
aloft and reaches a "lid". This causes the updraft to cease rising and
the air fans out. Anvils are signs of a mature thunderstorm. In this
photo, the anvil has rough, well-defined edges which implies the updraft
is strong. An anvil with ragged edges suggests the updraft is weak.
