Additional notes
This small barn collapsed when
strong
straight-line winds moved across northern Mercer County on June
22, 2006. The total collapse of this structure implies wind speeds
in excess of 75 mph. Notice the direction that the walls
collapsed, and the debris that is spread toward the left hand side of
the photo. This suggests this damage was caused by straight-line
winds blowing from right to left in this picture, rather than a tornado.
NWS product to cover this event: Severe Thunderstorm Warning
Safety Note: When a severe thunderstorm warning is issued,
it's important to get inside a sturdy building. As seen here, even
straight-line winds can do serious damage to a poorly-constructed
structure, which can lead to a serious injury.
