Additional notes
Intense, small-scale circulations
within tornadoes can cause significant damage on a very small scale.
This is why one home can be destroyed while neighboring houses are left
virtually untouched, as shown here. In this case, the three homes
which were destroyed in this photo exhibit at least
EF3
damage, with almost all but the interior walls left standing. This
suggests winds between 140 and 165 mph. The house on the left has
no walls left standing at all, which suggests winds briefly reached up to
180 mph when the tornado hit this home. Damage on this scale ranks
as strong EF3
or weak EF4
, and resulted in this tornado being
classified as an F4
on the old Fujita Scale.

Safety Note: When a basement is unavailable, it is important to
move to a small center room on the lowest floor without windows.
Closets and interior bathrooms work great. As shown here,
tornadoes up to EF-3 and low-end EF-4 strength will often leave small
interior rooms of well-built homes standing.
