Photographer's description: This photo was taken September 21, 2000. Xenia, Ohio. The building was Grocery Land, a grocery collapsed by the storm with a person trapped in building. The rescue crew I was assigned with searched the building for the person who used his cell phone to report his location behind coolers . Dayton Police canine searched the building, however, the trapped person self extricated himself from building. Notice the undisturbed soft drinks on shelves.

    Event Tornado damage

    Additional notes
The damage in this photo shows strong  EF3 damage.  Generally winds of 125 to 145 mph will remove the roof from a retail center and cause its exterior walls to collapse.

This tornado tracked nearly parallel to the devastating tornado which tore across Xenia in 1974.  Heavier damage elsewhere led to this tornado being rated an F4 on the old Fujita scale.

Safety Note:  Business owners should always have a tornado safety plan in place, and have it posted in view of customers.  Large retail centers, such as the grocery store pictured here, can be especially dangerous, since the large open spaces make the structure more prone to collapse.  If you are working or shopping in one of these stores when a tornado warning is issued, get to a small, interior room such as a bathroom, storage closet or office.  It is important to remain calm and be aware of others around you, since panic can spread easily in crowded areas.
