Widespread significant damage to well-built structures needs to be reported to the NWS as soon as safely possible. When you report, try to give an estimate of how many structures have been damaged and the approximate size of the area affected (if known). Be sure to convey that you are reporting damage to well-built structures like homes and businesses as opposed to poorly constructed structures such as barns or outhouses. Any known injuries or fatalities should be reported. Please be careful when relaying second-hand reports which tend to become exaggerated in significant events. Try to stay calm when reporting heavy damage so that your report is accurately received.
