Additional notes
|
The rapid rushing of water in this photo characterizes a
flash flood. This is the most dangerous type of flooding,
since the water can rise very quickly and catch people off guard.
The fast-moving water also exerts a severe force on objects and can
seriously damage or wash away roads and bridges (evidenced in the next
two photos).
Safety Note: Never approach a
swollen stream. You could slip or lose your footing and be washed
away in the rapid current. Many people die each year by
getting too close to rushing water.
Each year, more deaths occur due to flooding than from any other severe
weather related hazard. The main reason is people underestimate the
force and power of water. More than half of all flood related deaths
result from vehicles being swept downstream. Of these, most are
preventable. |
