Safety Note: If you are caught out in the open with no available
shelter when a tornado approaches, not all hope is lost. Lie flat and
face down with your hands protecting your head. Try to get away from
anything that may harm you, such as trees, cars or farm equipment. This
includes if you are out driving in the open. If the tornado is imminent,
abandon your car immediately! Do not try to outrun a tornado in
your car unless it is clearly a long distance away and you can get
out of its path at a right angle. In this photo, the tornado is
too close to attempt to outrun it.
