Cumulonimbus with Overshooting Top - Evendale, Ohio		10/04/2006

Additional notes

The cumulonimbus cloud in this photo was associated with a developing strong thunderstorm over Clinton County, Ohio. Where the cloud fans out at the top is the storm's anvil. Notice the bulging cloud sticking up above the anvil. This feature is referred to as an overshooting top, and indicates a very strong updraft within the thunderstorm. Click the "what's going on" link below to learn more about how the overshooting top of this storm developed. Also of note is the bubbly appearance to the clouds underneath the anvil (on either side of the flag pole in the foreground). These are developing mammatus clouds, formed by ice particles falling out of the anvil and cooling the ambient air.
