Setting-Up & Registering your school's new All-Hazards NOAA Weather Radio

This string of webpages is designed for a Midland NOAA Weather Monitor Model WR-100. This is the model that was sent to most schools for the national program to outfit all schools with life saving NOAA Weather radios. This page provides a step-by-step guide on how to set up and program your weather radio.

During the 2006-2007 school year, the National Weather Service partnered with the U.S. Office of Homeland Security in an initiative that sent Midland WR-100 NWR receivers to all public schools in the U.S. Private schools will be outfitted during the 2007-8 school year. This page is intended to help school officials program these radios; it is not intended as an endorsement of this particular receiver over any other receivers.

A weather radio is helpful in preparing you and your family for all weather. It will tell you when the NWS issues a watch or a warning for your county, and other counties if desired. It will also alert if the Dept of Homeland Security issues a public warning for your county.

The broadcast consists of several recorded weather messages which are repeated every few minutes and are routinely revised to provide the latest up-to-date information. Most importantly, these radios will IMMEDIATELY alert you whenever a warning has been issued for your county for any life threatening weather event (tornado, severe thunderstorm, flash flooding, etc.). The broadcasts on NOAA Weather Radio are tailored to the weather needs of the people within the broadcast area, and include a variety of programming subjects.

The next few, short pages will take you through the set-up process.
