The Tri-State "SkywarnPrepared" Recognition Program initiative is designed to:

  • Promote the importance of the SKYWARN Program at NWS Upton NY;
  • Recognize those organizations that have been and will continue to be an active and integral part of the NWS Upton SKYWARN program;
  • Generate additional interest in the NWS Upton SKYWARN Program, particularly among those in the Amateur Radio community.

Our SkywarnPrepared Organizations as of 8 May 2003...

  • 10-70 Repeater Association (also SkywarnActive!)
  • Orange County ARES
  • Greater Norwalk Amateur Radio Club (GNARC)
  • Rockland Repeater Association (RRA)


“SKYWARN Prepared” Amateur Radio Club (or other organization) Criteria:

  1. Organization Membership Requirements...either ”a” or “b,” whichever is smaller...this is at the discretion of the Tri-State SKYWARN Leadership Team.

    a)      
    Twenty (20) active members who are “current” SKYWARN spotters; OR
    b)       For smaller organizations, 20% of active membership, but no fewer than five (5) members, must be “current” SKYWARN spotters.

  2. The Editor of the Club’s newsletter (and/or website) allows coverage of SKYWARN events.  Examples include the following:

    a)    SKYWARN training classes (Basic and Advanced Classes).
    b)    Other SKYWARN or weather-related events (i.e., SKYWARN Recognition Day, Hazardous Weather Awareness Week).

"SKYWARN Active” Amateur Radio Club (or other organization) Criteria:

  1. All “SKYWARN Prepared” Club criterion must be met.
  2. Additional Organization Membership Requirements…either ”a” or “b,” whichever is smaller...(This is at the discretion of the Tri-State SKYWARN Leadership Team.)

    a)       60% of Club’s spotters must be “current” Advanced SKYWARN spotters (min. 10).
    b)       Twenty-five (25) “current” Advanced Spotters.

  3. Additional Requirements for Amateur Radio Clubs with Repeaters only:

    a)      The Board of Directors allows the County Coordinators to use the repeater on an emergency basis for severe weather events. (This could be intermittent or continual usage during SKYWARN activation.)

    b)       The Board of Directors allows the county SKYWARN Coordinators to use the club’s repeater(s) for the following...

    - Regularly scheduled SKYWARN drills
    - Special SKYWARN events
    - SKYWARN-related announcements to be broadcast during any regularly-scheduled nets run by the club.

Upon satisfactory certification of the above requirements by the applying organization’s Board of Directors to the Tri-State SKYWARN Leadership Team, the appropriate designation will be awarded for a three-year period.  This designation may be “renewed” after the three-year period upon certification that all requirements continue to be met.

The Tri-State Leadership Team
is defined as the NWS Upton Program Leader, Warning Coordination Meteorologist, and the Regional Coordinator for Amateur Radio.

Current Spotters are defined as those who have been trained (or retrained) by the NWS within the past three years.
