...MICROBURST/STRAIGHT LINE WIND DAMAGE CONFIRMED IN PORTLAND AND
EAST HAMPTON IN MIDDLESEX COUNTY CONNECTICUT...

*****************************************************************

LOCATION.......................PORTLAND AND EAST HAMPTON...MIDDLESEX
COUNTY CONNECTICUT
DATE...........................JULY 21 2010
ESTIMATED TIME.................435 TO 450 PM
ESTIMATED MAXIMUM WIND SPEED...90 TO 110 MPH
MAXIMUM PATH WIDTH.............1.5 MILES
PATH LENGTH....................2 MILES
FATALITIES.....................NONE
INJURIES.......................NONE

A STORM DAMAGE SURVEY TEAM FROM NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NEW YORK
NY AND EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT FROM PORTLAND CONNECTICUT CONDUCTED A
SURVEY OF STORM DAMAGE FROM THE EVENING OF JULY 21 2010.

DAMAGE CONSISTENT WITH A MICROBURST/STRAIGHT LINE WINDS WAS OBSERVED
IN A SWATH APPROXIMATELY 2 MILES LONG. IT BEGAN NEAR THE
INTERSECTION OF RT 66 AND MIDDLE HADDAM ROAD IN PORTLAND. ALMOST NO
DAMAGE WAS OBSERVED WEST OF THIS LOCATION. THE DAMAGE WAS OBSERVED
EASTWARD TO APPROXIMATELY 2 MILES TO KEIGHLY POND RD IN THE TOWN OF
EAST HAMPTON. DAMAGE BEYOND THIS LOCATION WAS NOT SEVERE AND
CONSISTED OF MAINLY SMALL BRANCHES.

ON ITS WESTERN EDGE...THE DAMAGE PATH WAS APPROXIMATELY 0.5 MILES
WIDE...AND WAS 1.5 MILES WIDE AT ITS EASTERN EDGE. THIS INDICATES
THAT WINDS HAD A DIVERGENT COMPONENT TO THEM.

SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO MANY LARGE TREES WAS OBSERVED. THROUGHOUT THE
DAMAGE PATH...TREES AVERAGING 80 FT IN HEIGHT AND UP TO 2 FT IN
DIAMETER WERE SNAPPED. THIS IS INDICATIVE OF WIND SPEEDS OF 90 TO
110 MPH. IN NEARLY ALL CASES...TREES WERE SNAPPED 20 TO 30 FT ABOVE
THE GROUND. ALSO...THE TYPE OFF TREE WAS ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY
HARDWOOD...OAK...MAPLE...OR ASH. THERE WAS SOME DAMAGE TO SOFTER
WOODS SUCH AS PINE...BUT NOTICEABLY FEWER OF THESE WERE DAMAGED.

THE MOST DAMAGE WAS OBSERVED GENERALLY ALONG MIDDLE HADDAM
ROAD...AND TREES WERE MOSTLY ORIENTED DIRECTLY EAST OR
EAST-SOUTHEAST. TO THE NORTH...ALONG BREEZY CORNERS ROAD AND JOBS
POND ROAD...TREE DAMAGE WAS ORIENTED EAST OR EAST-NORTHEAST.
TO THE SOUTH...ALONG LYMAN LANE AND WELLWYN RD...TREES WERE ORIENTED
TO THE SOUTHEAST. THIS PATTERN ALSO INDICATED DIVERGING WINDS.

THERE AS ALMOST NO DAMAGE TO STRUCTURES...SUCH AS ROOF SHINGLES AND
BUILDINGS. ONE EXCEPTION TO THIS WAS A LARGE SECTION OF ROOF RIPPED
OFF A FARM CENTER BUILDING ON MIDDLE HADDAM ROAD THAT WAS CARRIED
FOR ABOUT 100 YARDS. THIS BUILDING WAS NOT SURROUNDED BY TREES AND
WAS IN AN OPEN FIELD. THIS INDICATES THAT THE HIGHEST WINDS WERE
LOCATED ABOVE THE GROUND...AND DID NOT FULLY PENETRATE THE DENSE
TREE CANOPY. STRONGER WINDS WERE ABLE TO REACH THE GROUND WHERE
THERE WERE FEWER TREES. FOR EXAMPLE...AT ONE HOME ON BREEZY CORNERS
ROAD...THERE WAS DAMAGE TO WINDOWS AND SCREENS ON THE BOTTOM FLOOR
OF A HOME WHERE FEW LARGE TREES EXISTED IN LINE WITH THE STRONGEST
WINDS. HOWEVER NO ROOF OR UPPER FLOOR DAMAGE WAS NOTED. LARGE TREES
WERE SHEARED OFF 30 TO 40 FT ABOVE THE GROUND ALL AROUND THE HOUSE.

APPRECIATION IS EXTENDED TO THE STATE OF CONNECTICUT DEPARTMENT OF
EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AND HOMELAND SECURITY REGION THREE...AND THE
PORTLAND CONNECTICUT EMERGENCY MANAGERS.
