Student Volunteer Program - Summer 2013

Have the opportunity to experience what a career
in the National Weather Service entails!

What will you do during your volunteer (unpaid) time?

  • Gain familiarity with the forecast process for routine NWS public, river and aviation forecasts
  • Complete and present an operationally-oriented project focused on local area research
  • Apply classroom learning in an operational forecast setting
  • Learn how to launch/conduct upper-air radiosonde observations
  • Experience real-time severe weather operations at a forecast office
  • Participate in external outreach - activities could include visiting a cooperative observation
    site, accompanying forecasters on a storm survey, staffing a NWS booth at local events

What types of (dedicated) students are we looking for?

  • College students who are meteorology majors

  • -Rising juniors and seniors will be given preference, but rising sophomores and graduate
    students also will be considered

    -Students who are interested in a NWS career
  • Students with flexible schedules

  • -  Volunteer shifts will be completed on weekdays
    -  Volunteers will be expected to work 2 shifts per week

What does the application process involve?

  • Applicants will be required to submit a resume, transcript (official or unofficial), application
    form and a brief cover letter that describes their motivation for applying
  • Applications will be screened by NWS staff, with interviews for the top applicants

  • Applications are due Feb 22. Interviews will take place during early March
