...TORNADO TOUCHDOWN IN ROANOKE
CONFIRMED BY NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE...

A National Weather Service damage survey team completed a preliminary assessment of the damage from the storm on June 3rd within the Roanoke city limits. It was concluded that an EF-0 tornado, with winds speeds of approximately 70 to 80 mph, first touched down near the intersection of Welch Road and Bluefield Blvd near Fishburn Park at 7:27 pm edt. A narrow and very sporadic swath of tornado damage was then observed on a path toward the southeast, ending on Robin Hood Road about a mile and a half away from the initial touchdown point. The width of the damage was relatively narrow, less than 60 yards wide at its greatest. The storm was moving around 30 mph, so the total time the tornado was on the ground was three minutes or less. The tornado lifted completely before crossing the Mill Mountain Parkway. The damage was confined to trees blown down; a few falling on homes, but there was no direct damage to homes or other structures due to the tornadic winds. No injuries were reported.

The National Weather Service would like to thank the City of Roanoke Fire and Rescue, and Emergency Manager Mike Guzo for their help with the storm survey.
