 STATION LOCATION: The office is located at the Charleston International Airport/Air Force Base, roughly 12 miles northwest of downtown Charleston and 1/2 mile off I-26. The office address is 5777 S. Aviation Avenue, Charleston, SC 29406. The listed telephone number is 843-744-0303. 

 STATION ACTIVITY: The WFO in Charleston has forecast and short-term warning responsibility for 20 counties in southeast South Carolina and southeast Georgia as well as the nearby coastal waters. In particular, the office issues the following forecasts/products:

1)  zone forecasts for each of the 20 counties in the county warning area (CWA)

2) marine forecasts from S. Santee River, SC to Savannah, GA out 20 nautical miles and from Savannah, GA to    Altamaha Sound, GA out 60 nautical miles

3)  river flood warnings/statements for major river points in the CWA

4)  terminal forecasts for Charleston International Airport and Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport

 In addition, the office participates in a complete observation program (e.g., surface (ASOS), upper-air, and radar (WSR-88D)) as well as the Co-op Observer Program. NOAA Weather Radio (NWR) broadcasts on 5 transmitters across southeast South Carolina and southeast Georgia. Public/media briefings in person and by telephone are also provided. 

 TRANSIENT AND PERMANENT LIVING QUARTERS: Apartments in the Charleston metro area averaging $500-$700 per month are available for rent while homes in desirable locations average between $150,000 and $250,000 with higher prices generally found closer to the coast. Numerous hotels are also located within a few miles of the office.

 EATING FACILITIES: Numerous fast food and restaurant establishments can be found within a few miles of the office.

 LOCAL TRANSPORTATION: An automobile is necessary since public transportation is very limited.

 COMMUNITY DESCRIPTION: Charleston is a rich blend of history, charm, and progress. The cities of Charleston and North Charleston have a combined population of nearly 200,000 people while the tri-county area, including the communities of Mount Pleasant, Summerville, and Goose Creek, make the area population nearly 500,000. From the Battery downtown, one can see Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. Of interest to tourists and Charlestonians alike is Charles Towne Landing, an exposition park built on the site of the original 1670 settlement, and 3 beautiful historical gardens, one of which boasts the largest collection of camellias in America. Arts, recreational, and cultural opportunities are abundant. There are hundreds of miles of coastline which include marsh estuaries and public beaches with easy access. In addition, 2 large inland lakes (Lakes Moultrie and Marion) are nearby for recreational use. Fishing and hunting are also favorite sports of the area due to the abundance of fresh and salt water marine life, wild game, and fowl. Local sports teams include the Riverdogs (Single-A minor league baseball), the Battery (United Soccer League), and the Stingrays (East Coast Hockey League). Colleges and universities in the region include Charleston Southern University, The Citadel, College of Charleston, Medical University of South Carolina, Johnson and Wales University, and Trident Technical College. Churches of all denominations can also be found across the area.

 CHILD CARE FACILITIES: There are numerous child care centers throughout the local area.

 TAX INFORMATION: 5% state sales tax (6% in Charleston Co.) on all items purchased and a state income tax which is on a graduated rate of 2.5-7%. Property tax on a medium-priced house is generally $1200-$2500 per year. Charleston County also assesses personal property taxes.

 CLIMATE: The area climate is temperate, but subtropical along the immediate coast. Temperatures are modified considerably by the proximity to the ocean. The marine influence is noticeable during all seasons. Summers are hot and humid with frequent showers and thundershowers, making it the rainiest season. The warmest temperature ever recorded in Charleston is 104 degrees Fahrenheit. However, high temperatures over 100 degrees in the summer are infrequent.  The area also experiences occasional tropical systems during summer and early fall. Considerable sunshine and pleasant conditions usually are the rule during the spring and fall. Dry spells are not uncommon during the spring and fall seasons, but prolonged, severe droughts are rare. Snowfall is also rare as winters are generally mild. The coldest temperature ever recorded in Charleston is 6 degrees Fahrenheit.
