WEATHER OBSERVATIONS IN GREENVILLE-SPARTANBURG AREA The climate data listed on this server is a compilation of weather records from various locations across the Greenville-Spartanburg metro area since the early 1900's. Although official weather records for this area date back to 1893, our current dataset begins with records starting in 1918 at the US Weather Bureau office at the Greenville County Courthouse. During the 1920's and 1930's official weather observations were taken at no less than four different locations around Greenville before finally moving to the Municipal Airport downtown in 1941. Observations were taken at the Airport downtown until 1962 when Weather Bureau moved to the new Greenville-Spartanburg Jetport in Greer. In Spartanburg, our dataset begins when weather observations began in 1930 at the Spartanburg Airport. As was the case in Greenville, observations were taken at the Airport downtown until 1962 when Weather Bureau moved to the new Greenville- Spartanburg Jetport in Greer. The current climatology program here at the NWS in Greenville- Spartanburg has combined all the records and normals for each of these locations across both Greenville and Sparatanburg for a new "metro" area dataset. The official weather observation site is currently the GSP international airport, but we do note in certain categories whether the records were originally set at Greenville (GMU), Spartanburg (SPA), or GSP.
