...TORNADO CONFIRMED IN GASTON COUNTY NORTH CAROLINA...


THE GREENVILLE SPARTANBURG OFFICE OF THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE
HAS COMPLETED ITS PRELIMINARY SURVEY OF THE STORM DAMAGE THAT
OCCURRED IN GASTON COUNTY EARLY FRIDAY MORNING.


THE SURVEY CONFIRMED AN INTERMITTENT TORNADO TRACK THAT EXTENDED
FROM GASTONIA TO MCADENVILLE TO CATAWBA HEIGHTS OFF STATE HIGHWAY
273. THE TRACK WAS 6.25 MILES LONG AND 75 YARDS WIDE.


WIND SPEEDS WERE ESTIMATED NEAR 11O MPH AT THE BEGINNING OF THE TRACK
TO 115 TO 120 MPH IN CATAWBA HEIGHTS. THIS RANKS THE TORNADO AS A
LOW END EF-2 ON THE ENHANCED FUJITA SCALE. THE STORM FIRST TOUCHED
DOWN AT 210 AM EDT AND THE LAST DAMAGE WAS REPORTED AT 220 AM EDT.
NO WARNING WAS IN EFFECT AT THE TIME THE STORM STRUCK.

...TORNADO CONFIRMED IN DAVIE COUNTY NORTH CAROLINA...


THE GREENVILLE SPARTANBURG OFFICE OF THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE
HAS COMPLETED ITS INITIAL SURVEY OF STORM DAMAGE THAT OCCURRED
THURSDAY NIGHT IN DAVIE COUNTY. THE WEATHER SERVICE CONFIRMED A
TORNADO TRACK JUST NORTH OF ADVANCE NORTH CAROLINA IN THE
NORTHEAST CORNER OF DAVIE COUNTY. THE STORM TRACK WAS ABOUT 7
MILES LONG...BUT ONLY 3.1 MILES OF THE TRACK WAS IN DAVIE COUNTY.
THE TORNADO TRACK WAS BETWEEN 50 AND 100 YARDS WIDE. THE FIRST
DAMAGE WAS WITNESSED AT 1015 PM EDT.


WIND SPEEDS WERE ESTIMATED AT 122 MPH JUST BEFORE THE TORNADO CROSSED
THE YADKIN RIVER INTO FORSYTH COUNTY. THIS WIND SPEED RATES THE
TORNADO AS AN EF-2 ON THE ENHANCED FUJITA SCALE. A TORNADO WATCH
WAS IN EFFECT AT THE TIME OF THE STORM AND A TORNADO WARNING HAD
BEEN ISSUED BY THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE AT 950 PM EDT.
