PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT

650 PM EDT THU MAY 6 1999

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SURVEYED THE WIND DAMAGE THAT OCCURRED IN
BUNCOMBE COUNTY JUST BEFORE DAYBREAK ON THURSDAY. IT WAS CONCLUDED
THAT A TORNADO WITH WINDS OF APPROXIMATELY 75 TO 100 MPH /F1 INTENSITY/
AFFECTED AN AREA APPROXIMATELY 2 MILES LONG AND ONE QUARTER MILE WIDE
THAT EXTENDED FROM NEAR INTERSTATE 240 AT THE HAYWOOD ROAD EXIT
EASTWARD ACROSS THE FRENCH BROAD RIVER...PAST ASHEVILLE HIGH SCHOOL TO
BILTMORE ROAD NEAR UNADALLA AVENUE.

RESIDENTS IN THE AREA NEAR THE BEGINNING OF THE PATH REPORTED THAT THE
DAMAGE OCCURRED BETWEEN 6 AND 615 AM EDT. DAMAGE INCLUDED HUNDREDS OF
TREES BLOWN DOWN...SOME MORE THAN 2 FEET IN DIAMETER. THERE WAS
CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE TO HOMES AND OTHER STRUCTURES FROM FALLEN TREES AS
WELL AS DOWNED POWER LINES. IT WAS APPARENT THAT WINDS AT TREE TOP
LEVEL WERE CONSIDERABLY STRONGER THAN WINDS ON THE GROUND...WHICH IS
CHARACTERISTIC OF TORNADOES.

OTHER DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE SAME WEATHER SYSTEM IS CONTAINED IN
LOCAL STORM REPORTS ISSUED BY THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN GREENVILLE-
SPARTANBURG.
