National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg Conducted a Storm Survey in a Greer S.C. Neighborhood and Surrounding Areas
|
An area two and a half miles northeast of Greer S.C., between Highway 29 and Hammett
Store Road experienced widespread damaging winds early Tuesday evening, March 4. Most
of the damage was concentrated along Brookdale Acres Drive and Lindsey Ridge Road.
Winds toppled numerous trees, damaged roofs and windows to 10-15 homes, flipped a car,
and destroyed an out building.
A survey of the downed trees, roof damage, and Doppler Radar data conclude that the
damaging wind was associated with straight line thunderstorm winds. Winds were estimated
to range from 75 to 85 mph with higher gusts. This estimation is based on the extensive
tree damage and structural roof damage. Interviews with homeowners and National Weather
Service Radar data indicate that the damage occurred around 606 PM. A Severe Thunderstorm
Warning was issued for Spartanburg and western Cherokee Counties at 556 PM.
