BASIC SKYWARN SPOTTER TRAINING

WHEN16 March 2010 : 7pm
WHEREPolk County Public Library
INFOSkywarn spotters serve a critical role in helping to alert their communities of the approach of severe weather. During the training session, spotters will learn what kind of severe weather to expect when the National Weather Service issues warnings for severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and flash floods. We will use video and still pictures to teach spotters how to identify tornadoes, wall clouds, areas of damaging winds, large hail and developing flash flooding.

The training will also provide information on the best way to relay severe weather information to our office and to local officials. We will cover ways to stay safe when reporting severe weather. These practices can also be used in every day life and by emergency services personnel in the field. There are a number of places on the internet where spotters can brief themselves on upcoming and ongoing severe weather, some of which are covered in this training session.

Skywarn spotter training is free and open to anyone who has an interest in severe weather. There is no obligation to report severe weather after the training, though we do collect contact
information. Training certificates and spotter guides will be distributed after the class.

The training will be held at 7 pm at the Polk County Public Library. The address is 1289 West Mills Street Columbus, NC 28722If you wish to attend this training, please send an email to bryan.mcavoy@noaa.gov. This way we can get an idea of how many people to expect.

Remember, you DO NOT have to be a licensed, amateur {ham} radio operator to attend and/or participate in the SkywarnTM program!
