High tide conditions combined with a 3 to 5 foot storm surge to cause massive coastal flooding and beach erosion (Fig 2).
Numerous homes, piers, and seawalls were damaged or destroyed (Fig 3). One notable pier which was washed away was Old
Orchard Pier in Maine, which had hosted musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, and Benny Goodman. Hurricane
force winds caused widespread destruction to seawalls, homes, and businesses.
