Because of the 2004 tsunami in the Indian Ocean and more recently the tsunami in Japan, there is a wealth of information on tsunamis available on the internet. In addition, there are numerous videos that not only show the impact of large tsunami waves, but also the impact of much smaller waves. Below is a sampling of some good sources of information on tsunamis and tsunami preparedness. A good general source of information on tsunamis, can be found at: http://www.tsunami.noaa.gov/ The Maine Geological Survey has a web site that provides information specifically on the tsunami threat in Atlantic Ocean and, in particular, tsunami threat in the Gulf of Maine: http://www.maine.gov/doc/nrimc/mgs/explore/hazards/tsunami/jan05.htm Information on the National Tsunami Awareness Week and the National Tsunami Hazardous Mitigation Plan, including information on state hazard planning for tsunamis, is available at: http://nthmp.tsunami.gov/taw/tsunami-awareness-week.html and http://nthmp.tsunami.gov/2011annualmeeting/index.html VIDEO LINKS... While the National Weather Service does not endorse any of the links below, the links do provide video from the March 11, 2011 tsunami as the waves reached California. In particular, they demonstrate the speed of the current and the damage produced by the rapidly moving water. The link below shows a time lapse of series of waves as they enter and recede from Crescent City Harbor in California. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pp_jp5QIWzw It is worth noting that one person was washed out to sea and is presumed dead by the strong currents near Crescent City. The following link shows the power of just a small tsunami wave as it moves through Santa Cruz Harbor in California. The video also shows exactly what people should not do when a tsunami watch, warning, or advisory is in effect - that is, numerous people are putting their lives at risk after heading down to the harbor to watch the tsunami. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MDnlcbRMaQ Remember, if the waters along the coast unexpectedly start to rise or recede, move off the beach and/or away from the shoreline. Tsunamis can strike with the force of a raging river. Respect the power of water and move to higher ground. JENSENIUS NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE GRAY, MAINE NNNN
