The Patriot's Day Storm of 2007

*** The National Weather Service in Gray, Maine is Requesting Coastal Flood Pictures from the Patriot's Day Storm ***

The National Weather Service is requesting digital pictures from the Patriot's Day tidal flooding of April 16th, 2007. High tide occurred during the late morning hours and ended up being the 7th biggest tide on record for Portland at 13.28 feet. Large, pounding waves struck the coastline, causing significant damage in many communities. 30 foot waves ripped at buoys and caused locally severe damage to personal property. To better place this coastal flood into historical perspective, this storm tide was higher than the storm tide during the "Perfect Storm" (October 30, 1991). If you have any digital pictures of flooding along the Maine or New Hampshire coastlines that you could pass along, it would be greatly appreciated! The National Weather Service wishes to better document this significant event. Also, this documentation would allow for additional detail in future coastal flood warnings of this magnitude. Site specific storm tide information could be distributed to the public and emergency management if a tide of this nature were to occur again. Please send images to john.w.cannon@noaa.gov and gyx.webmaster@noaa.gov. Place a brief description of the coastal flood and when and where it was occurring. Your efforts will help community members across Maine and New Hampshire in the future. A sincere thank you in advance!

Northeast U.S. Surface Analysis for 4/16/2007 at 8 am EDT animated surface analysis

An area of low pressure intensified rapidly as it moved slowly from the southeastern United States on the morning of Sunday, April 15th to near New York City by the morning of Monday, April 16th. The intense low over New York City, in combination with high pressure over eastern Canada, produced a tight pressure gradient across the area which resulted in strong east to northeast winds. The strong winds downed numerous trees, caused widespread power outages, and numerous road closures, especially near the coast. Along the coast, the strong winds produced a storm surge and large ocean waves of up to 30 feet. The combination of astronomical high tides, storm surge, and large battering waves resulted in coastal flooding and severe erosion in areas south of Portland.

The storm also produced heavy rainfall and, when combined with snowmelt, produced widespread flooding. Across the mountains, the rain was prceded by heavy snow. The intense low drifted very slowly eastward from Monday morning through Friday morning and gradually weakened. The persistent onshore wind caused high tide to reach or exceed the 12 foot flood level at Portland during 7 tidal cycles.
