The air temperature at Frying Pan Shoals is dictated by two main features: the
Gulf Stream and the cooler shelf waters during the winter months. The coolest
average temperature occurs in January (55 deg. F) however, the winter months
show the greatest variation in temperatures. This variation is a result of this
station's proximity to the cool shelf waters and the Gulf Stream and the passage
of a higher frequency of warm and cold fronts. The warmest average
temperature occurs in July (80 deg. F) and this also corresponds to the least
amount of variability due very similar temperatures from the Gulf Stream to the
shelf waters. There is also very little frontal activity during the middle
of summer.
