Announcing the "Carolinas Coastal Ocean Observing and Prediction System"
Caro-COOPS is a NOAA-funded program, led by the
University of South Carolina and North Carolina State University, that is
focused on monitoring and modeling coastal ocean conditions in the
Carolinas. Collaborating institutions include the University of North
Carolina at Wilmington and the South Carolina Department of Natural
Resources. The goals of the project are to provide near real-time
conditions, and ultimately predictive capabilities, to help mitigate natural
hazards, support the management of marine resources and ecosystems, and
facilitate safe and efficient marine operations. The present operational
area for the Caro-COOPS observing network extends from Sunset Beach, NC, to
Beaufort, SC, and offshore to depths of approximately 100 feet. The
observational array now consists of five offshore moorings and three
pier-based water level stations that report continuous oceanographic and
meteorological conditions in near real-time. For more information, please
