Welcome to The National Weather Service Wilmington NC Miscellaneous Products Page. This page gives a description and examples of various products The National Weather Service issues. Air Stagnation Advisory
An Air Stagnation Advisory is issued when atmospheric conditions become stable enough to cause air pollutants to accumulate. The criteria for issuing this product can vary from city to city...and is developed in conjunction with the local or state EPA and the product is issued at their request.
Area Forecast Discussion
The Area Forecast Discussion is one of the more popular products for professionals and enthusiasts alike. This product gives the public insight into what forecasters are thinking and reasoning behind the forecasts. See an example.
Blowing Dust Advisory
A Blowing Dust Advisory is issued for widespread or localized blowing dust reducing visibilities to one mile or less but remaining above Dust Storm Warning criteria. Wind speeds of 25 MPH or greater are usually required.
Dense Fog Advisory
A Dense Fog Advisory is issued for widespread or localized fog reducing visibilities to one quarter of a mile or less. This can be issued anywhere from the current hour out to 36 hours in advance. See an example.
Dense Smoke Advisory
A Dense Smoke Advisory is issued for widespread or localized smoke reducing visibilities to one quarter of a mile or less. This product can be issued anywhere from the current hour out to 36 hours in advance.
Dust Storm Warning
A Dust Storm Warning is issued for widespread or localized blowing dust reducing visibilities to one quarter of a mile or less. Sustained wind speeds of 25 MPH or greater are usually required. This product can be issued anywhere from the current hour out to 36 hours in advance.
Excessive Heat Watch
An Excessive Heat Watch is issued for a 50 percent or greater chance of meeting or exceeding Excessive Heat Warning criteria. This product can be issued for 12...24...or 36 hours in the future.
Excessive Heat Warning
An Excessive Heat Warning is issued when Heat Indicies are 110 degrees or higher for at least two hours. This product can be issued anywhere from the current hour out to 36 hours.
Fire Weather Watch
A Fire Weather Watch is issued for a 50 percent or greater chance of Red Flag Warning conditions developing within the next 12 to 72 hours. See the description below for an explanation of Red Flag conditions. See an example.
Hazardous Weather Outlook
The Hazardous Weather Outlook is designed as a "Heads Up" product to expected hazardous weather and its potential impact covering the entire seven day forecast period. This product is a first stop for customers to find information on potentially hazardous weather...its timing...its location... and its impact. See an example.
Heat Advisory
A Heat Advisory is issued when heat indicies of 105 degrees or higher are expected for two hours or more while remaining under Excessive Heat Warning criteria. This product can be issued anywhere from the current hour out to 36 hours.
High Wind Watch
A High Wind Watch is issued for a 50 percent or greater chance of meeting or exceeding High Wind Warning criteria. This product can be issued for 12...24...or 36 hours in the future.
High Wind Warning
A High Wind Warning is issued when wind speeds sustained at 40 MPH are present for one hour or more or for non-thunderstorm wind gusts of 58 MPH or greater for any duration. This product can be issued anywhere from the current hour out to 36 hours.
Red Flag Warning
A Red Flag Warning is a Fire Weather product and is issued when any two of the following conditions are met:
Sustained surface winds of at least 20 MPH.
A significant wind shift during a period of active fire supression efforts.
Minimum relative humidities of 25 percent or less.
Dry lightning or lightning after an extended period of very dry conditions.
This product can be issued anywhere from the current hour out to 24 hours in the future. See an example.
Severe Thunderstorm Watch
This product is issued by The Storm Prediction Center in Norman Oklahoma. A watch is issued when there is a forecast of six or more events/reports of either hail an inch or greater in diameter...winds 58 MPH or greater or tornadoes. See an example.
Severe Thunderstorm Warning
A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued for a radar indication or reports of hail of an inch in diameter or greater...or thunderstorm winds of 58 MPH or greater. See an example.
Special Weather Statement
The Special Weather Statement is a priority disseminated product that is used to increase awareness about significant...but less than severe weather. See an example.
Tornado Watch
This product is issued by The Storm Prediction Center in Norman Oklahoma. It is issued when there is a forecast of three or more tornadoes or any single tornado that could produce F2 damage or greater. See an example.
Tornado Warning
A Tornado Warning is issued for a radar indication or report of a tornado. See an example.
Wind Advisory
A Wind Advisory is issued for winds of 31 to 39 MPH for one hour or more or for wind gusts of 46 to 57 MPH for any duration. This product can be issued from the current hour out to 36 hours in the future.
