SKYWARN
The National Weather Service needs your help! Even with the newest
satellite and radar technology available to us, your eyes can be the most
valuable tools for spotting severe weather.
Become a trained National Weather Service SKYWARN storm spotter and
call your severe weather reports in to the National Weather Service. Your
timely reports can result in others being warned about hazardous weather
before it reaches them, and also help us provide additional information
that may make the difference in someone taking lifesaving action!
What are we interested in? We want to hear about...
- winds measured at or above 40 mph
- any wind damage to trees, power lines, or structures
- any hail
- any flooding
- and any funnel cloud, tornado, or waterspout activity.
Two SKYWARN presentations are available from the NWS in Wilmington. The 40-45
minute basic training, ideal for police, fire/rescue, and dispatch personnel, covers the
warning process and the role of spotters, types of weather hazards we face in the
Carolinas, how to report them, and how to recognize some forms of threatening
weather. The 90-minute advanced class includes all the subject matter of the basic
class, plus information on the types, structure, and life cycle of thunderstorms, and how
it relates to the occurrence of hazardous weather.
The following training sessions have been set up for
those wanting to be new weather spotters, and as a refresher if you've had
SKYWARN training before. The sessions are free and open to the public.
