1993 brought one system to the Carolinas. Emily developed August 22nd in the central Atlantic and moved northeast brushing the Outer Banks on the 31st before being deflected back out to sea by an approaching cold front. As Emily passed by the Outer Banks it was a category three storm. Sustained winds of 92 mph occurred on Hatteras Island during the evening of the 31st. Storm surge flooding from the Pamlico Sound produced tides about ten and a half feet above normal from Buxton to Avon and eight and a half feet at Frisco and Hatteras village.
