1999 was an active year, with three hurricanes affecting the Carolinas. Dennis approached the southeast North Carolina coast in late August before veering to the east and stalling off of Cape Hatteras. After meandering off the Outer Banks for a couple of days, Dennis eventually move inland as a tropical storm over the Carteret county coast in early September. Dennis was quickly followed by Floyd, which made landfall at Cape Fear in mid September as a category two hurricane. In October, Irene moved north along the South Carolina coast before taking a turn to the east and moving out to sea.
