Additional notes
The leaves in this photo are beginning to turn
brown at the edges which is a sign of drought stress. In deciduous
trees, curling, marginal browning, shedding, and early autumn coloration
of leaves are well-known responses to drought. In conifers,
drought may cause yellowing and browning of needle tips.
Southern Ohio continues to be plagued with
much-below average rainfall for most of 2007. Currently, the
U.S. Drought
Monitor has classified much of Ohio as D1, or moderate drought.
Portions of far southern Ohio, including portions of Clermont County, have been
classified as D2, or severe drought. D2 conditions extend
southward into parts of northern Kentucky.
