Additional notes
The dead leaves in this photo are a sign of
serious drought stress. To conserve water, trees may shed their
leaves in severe cases. In deciduous
trees, additional signs of drought stress are curling, marginal browning, shedding, and early autumn coloration
of leaves are well-known responses to drought. In conifers,
drought may cause yellowing and browning of needle tips.
Southern Ohio continues to be plagued with
much-below average rainfall for most of 2007. Currently, the
U.S. Drought
Monitor has classified much of Ohio as D1, or moderate drought.
Portions of far southern Ohio, including portions of Clermont County, have been
classified as D2, or severe drought. D2 conditions extend
southward into parts of northern Kentucky.
