Additional notes
Corn senescence (death of the plant) occurs
naturally near the end of grain fill as plant metabolism slowly
deteriorates. Leaf senescence in corn fields throughout southern Ohio
has occurred rapidly during the last week or two, partly in response to
the cumulative stress of drought conditions.
The pattern of leaf senescence in many fields has been unusual in that
the upper leaves have died as rapidly as the lower leaves, leaving green
leaves only in the center part of the plants near the maturing ears. In
the Midwest, this pattern of upper leaf senescence can occur from heat
and drought stress.
Southern Ohio continues to be plagued with
much-below average rainfall for most of 2007. Currently, the
U.S. Drought
Monitor has classified much of Ohio as D1, or moderate drought.
Portions of far southern Ohio, including portions of Clermont County, have been
classified as D2, or severe drought. D2 conditions extend
southward into parts of northern Kentucky.
