Cold air funnel |
Additional notes
|
This
cold air funnel
formed when a cold-core closed midlevel low moved into the Ohio Valley
over the Labor Day weekend.
These phenomena are not totally understood by meteorologists, but
usually occur when showers develop in the vicinity of an upper low and
a pocket of cold air aloft. Cold air funnels do not form from
well-developed
supercell
thunderstorms, which is usually how most funnel clouds develop. In
fact, most cold air funnels form from weak showers, which may not even
contain any lightning.
Note that the National Weather Service will usually not issue a tornado
warning for a cold air funnel. This is partly due to the fact that
they rarely touch down and are nearly impossible to detect on radar. However if cold air funnels are
happening or expected, a special weather statement may be issued.
