Flash Flood Aftermath - Decatur, Ohio

    06/04/2008

Photographer's description: Bridge damage, West Fork Road

    Photographer Jerry Dierks
    Date taken June 4, 2008
Location Near Decatur, OH (Brown County)     map
    Event Flash flood aftermath

    Additional notes

A flash flood resulted in damage to this bridge, causing much of the pavement to be torn off.

Safety Note:  This photo shows the extreme power rushing water can exert on bridges and roadways.  Never drive across a flooded bridge!  As this photo shows, the bridge can be seriously damaged or wash away and you and your vehicle may be swept downstream.   Turn around, don't drown!

Each year, more deaths occur due to flooding than from any other severe weather related hazard. The main reason is people underestimate the force and power of water. More than half of all flood related deaths result from vehicles being swept downstream. Of these, most are preventable.
