Additional notes
The damage in this photo shows strong
EF3
damage. Generally winds of 125 to 145 mph will remove the roof
from a retail center and cause its exterior walls to collapse.
The tornado that caused this damage tore a
devastating path across Xenia, Ohio during the Super Outbreak of 1974.
The tornado, rated F5
on the old Fujita scale, killed over 30 people, injured 1100, and
destroyed more than 1000 homes. Some of the F5
damage that this tornado inflicted on Xenia can be seen elsewhere in
this photo gallery.

Safety Note: Business owners should always have a
tornado safety plan in place, and have it posted in view of customers.
Large retail centers, such as the grocery store pictured here, can be
especially dangerous, since the large open spaces make the structure
more prone to collapse. If you are working or shopping in one of
these stores when a tornado warning is issued, get to a small, interior
room such as a bathroom, storage closet or office. It is important to
remain calm and be aware of others around you, since panic can spread
easily in crowded areas.
