Photographer's description: An example of flooding of
Twelvemile Creek in California, Ky. Since this creek extends up into northern
portions of Pendleton County, rains far removed from the site of this picture
can result in flooding. It is not uncommon for the creek to come out of its
banks 3 or 4 times a year. The road runs parallel to the creek which is on the
right.

Additional notes
This creek significantly rose out of
its banks as a result of heavy rain upstream. The rate of rainfall
likely pushed this creek up quickly, which can often catch residents and
travelers off guard. This situation is referred to as a
flash flood, which differs from a regular river flood because of
the dangerously quickly-rising water.

Safety Note: This photo shows
water in excess of a foot covering the roadway. If the water is
moving, this is enough to carry a vehicle off the road. Any
motorist who encounters a situation similar to the one pictured here
should immediately stop and find another route. Turn around,
don't drown!
Each year, more deaths occur due to flooding than from any other severe
weather related hazard. The main reason is people underestimate the
force and power of water. More than half of all flood related deaths
result from vehicles being swept downstream. Of these, many are
preventable.
