Additional notes
Rime ice forms when water droplets within a saturated
airmass are deposited on objects and instantly freeze, forming
interlocking ice crystals. Foggy conditions in a subfreezing
atmosphere are prime conditions to produce significant amounts of rime
ice. In this case, widespread dense fog blanketed much of Indiana
and Ohio the morning of February 20, 2003 while the temperature was
below freezing. This favored the
deposition of rime ice on exposed surfaces.
