Additional notes
This shelf cloud was associated with a strong
thunderstorm that had a history of producing damaging winds (downed
trees and power lines in southern Brown County). However the storm had
weakened by the time it reached the photographer in northern Brown
County. As seen in this photo, a shelf cloud which is displaced well
ahead of a thunderstorm often is a sign that a storm is losing its
potential for severe winds (the rain here is located way behind the
trees on the right). Accordingly, the photographer reported that winds
were only around 30 mph when the storm moved overhead.
