How Often Have We Dropped Below Zero Degrees?

As of March 1st, there have been 12 days so far this year (and this winter season) in which temperatures have dropped below zero degrees in Dayton, 8 days in Columbus, and 7 days in Cincinnati. As a result, this year and the 2013-2014 winter season already rank near the top in terms of the number of subzero days so far. Based on the 30-year climatological normal period 1981 to 2010, there have been, on average, 3 days each year with temperatures dipping below zero degrees in Cincinnati, 2 in Columbus, and 4 in Dayton.

Below are graphs and rankings of the historical frequency of subzero days in past calendar years and past winter seasons for each of our three climate stations, beginning with the first full year of data on record for each site. Click each graph for a larger version and click here for the full dataset. Please note that for this study the "winter" season spans the period running from July - June in order to reflect all occurrences of subzero temperatures.
