PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WILMINGTON OH
321 PM EST TUE FEB 19 2008

...DAMAGE SURVEY CONDUCTED BY NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FOR
PREBLE COUNTY STORM OF JANUARY 29 2008...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN WILMINGTON CONDUCTED A DAMAGE SURVEY
IN THE LEWISBURG AREA OF PREBLE COUNTY IN EARLY FEBRUARY FOR A STORM
WHICH OCCURRED ON JANUARY 29TH...2008. AFTER CLOSE ANALYSIS OF THE
INFORMATION AVAILABLE TO US...WE HAVE DECIDED TO CLASSIFY THE STORM
SURVEYED IN THE LEWISBURG AREA AS AN EF0 TORNADO WITH ESTIMATED WINDS
OF 75 TO 85 MPH. AT BEST...A FEW BRIEF TOUCHDOWNS OCCURRED WITH THIS
EVENT WHICH LASTED ONLY A FEW MINUTES. THE TIME OF THE EVENT WAS AT
ABOUT 9 PM EST.

THE PATH LENGTH FOR THIS STORM WAS APPROXIMATELY 2 MILES. HOWEVER...
THE TORNADO WAS NOT ON THE GROUND FOR THE ENTIRE 2 MILES. IT
APPEARS THAT THE TORNADO PROBABLY SKIPPED ALONG THE PATH AND THAT
STRAIGHT LINE WIND DAMAGE ALSO OCCURRED WITH THIS STORM. AT ITS
WIDEST...THE TORNADO WAS APPROXIMATELY 60 TO 80 YARDS WIDE. THE PATH
OF THE STORM BEGAN ABOUT 1 MILE SOUTHWEST OF LEWISBURG AND ENDED AT
ABOUT ONE HALF MILE SOUTHEAST OF LEWISBURG.

SOME OF THE DAMAGE FROM THE STORM INCLUDED DAMAGE TO A BARN ON
SHIELDS ROAD. THE STORM RE-STRENGTHENED AT THE I-70 AND ROUTE 503
INTERCHANGE...JUST OUTSIDE OF DOWNTOWN LEWISBURG. DAMAGE THERE
INCLUDED PART OF THE ROOF BLOWN OFF OF A HOUSE AND EXTENSIVE TREE
DAMAGE ON THE PROPERTY. THE CREEK BED BEHIND THE BACKYARD ALSO
CONTAINED MORE TREE DAMAGE IN A CONVERGENT PATTERN.

AN INTENSE COLD FRONT TRIGGERED A LINE OF THUNDERSTORMS...WHICH MOVED
INTO THE WFO WILMINGTON FORECAST AREA AFTER 8 PM. THERE WERE
WIDESPREAD REPORTS OF WINDS IN THE 40-60 MPH RANGE...AS WELL AS
NUMEROUS TREES DOWNED AND ISOLATED STRUCTURAL DAMAGE. ALTHOUGH
LIGHTNING BECAME LESS PREVALENT WITH THE LINE AS THE EVENING
PROGRESSED...THE STRENGTH OF THE FRONT ALLOWED STRONG...STORM SCALE
WINDS TO CONTINUE ALONG THE LINE THROUGH THE EVENING HOURS.
