Wind damage in Alexandria, KY

PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WILMINGTON OH
451 PM EDT THU MAY 26 2011

...STRAIGHT LINE WINDS CONFIRMED IN ALEXANDRIA IN CAMPBELL COUNTY
KENTUCKY...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS CONFIRMED STRAIGHT LINE WIND DAMAGE
IN ALEXANDRIA IN CAMPBELL COUNTY KENTUCKY. THIS WIND DAMAGE OCCURRED
AT ABOUT 1249 AM ON THURSDAY MAY 26.

A SURVEY PERFORMED ON THURSDAY AFTERNOON FOUND EXTENSIVE TREE AND
MINOR STRUCTURAL DAMAGE ALONG MAIN STREET IN ALEXANDRIA.

MORE SPECIFICALLY...THE BULK OF THE DAMAGE BEGAN IN THE ALEXANDRIA
CEMETERY...AND CONTINUED ACROSS SPILLMAN DRIVE WHERE HEAVY TREE
DAMAGE WAS NOTED. THERE WAS ALSO TREE DAMAGE ALONG GILBERT RIDGE
ROAD TO THE NORTH OF THE CEMETERY. MORE DAMAGE WAS FOUND ALONG MAIN
STREET...ACROSS US HIGHWAY 27...AND ESPECIALLY ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF
MAIN STREET. THE OVERALL SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE PATH WAS 1 MILE.

THE VAST MAJORITY OF THE TREES WERE SNAPPED OFF AND UPROOTED...BLOWN
TO THE EAST NORTHEAST. THERE WAS LITTLE TO NO INDICATION OF TREE
DEBRIS IN A CONVERGENT PATTERN OFTEN ASSOCIATED WITH TORNADO DAMAGE
FOR TREES. A FEW TREES ON THE NORTH SIDE OF MAIN STREET WERE LYING
TO THE NORTH IN A DIVERGING PATTERN FROM THE MAIN
DAMAGE...CONFIRMING THAT A CHANNELED STRAIGHT-LINE WIND EVENT LIKELY
ORIGINATED IN THE CEMETERY AND MOVED THROUGH ALEXANDRIA ALONG AND
SOUTH OF MAIN STREET. THE NORTHWARD-LYING TREES ON THE NORTH SIDE OF
MAIN STREET ARE CONSISTENT WITH THE NORTHERN FRINGE OF THE WIND
MAXIMUM.

THE MINOR STRUCTURAL DAMAGE WAS MAINLY LIGHT ROOF AND SHINGLE DAMAGE
TO FEW RESIDENCES.

WIND ESTIMATES BASED ON THE TREE DAMAGE ARE PLACED AT 85 TO 90 MPH.
RADIAL VELOCITIES FROM THE TCVG TERMINAL DOPPLER RADAR /FAA RADAR/
SUPPORT THESE WINDS NEAR ALEXANDRIA AROUND 1249 AM.
