Hurricane Floyd Remembered: Lessons Learned 1999-2009 |
|
During Flood Awareness Week of 2009, NWS Newport/Morehead City launched a year long outreach campaign focusing on the 10 year anniversary of Hurricane Floyd and the dangers of hurricanes and inland flooding. On Wednesday March 18th, local, state, and federal agencies gathered in Greenville, NC to talk about how they were tested during and after the devastating flooding of Hurricane Floyd, and how they are better prepared to handle a storm of its magnitude today. Representatives from North Carolina's Emergency Management, Red Cross, State Flood Mapping Program, as well as meteorologists from the National Weather Service's offices of Newport (MHX) and Raleigh (RAH) presented their agencies impacts and improvements since 1999. Members of the media, town/county managers, law enforcement, and other state and local agencies attended the half day session.
