Within NOAA’s National Weather Service, the modeling system is the National Weather Service River Forecast System, often called NWSRFS. Here, the river model, such as the Sacramento Soil Moisture Accounting model, is used in a operational environment. NWSFRS not only has an operation forecasting element, but also has a calibration and forecaster interaction element. The Operational Forecasting System produces a deterministic forecast product at the end of each operational run. This is when model state conditions are saved. Once this information is available, an ensemble of meteorological data can be used as model forcings to simulate an ensemble of streamflows. The results are then used to create a suite of ESP products.
