Satellite Imagery
Note the plume of tropical moisture streaming north ahead of low pressure...which entrained moisture from tropical storm Rina near the Yucatan Peninsula. The fact that the coastal low could tap into this moisture feed allowed for the heavy liquid equivalent precipitation amounts...with generally 1 1/2 to 3 falling inches across the region.

OKX 0.5 Degree Reflectivity Data

The following is a base reflectivity radar loop from the KOKX WSR-88D. Moderate to heavy precipitation overspread the region Saturday morning ahead of low pressure strengthening off the the Mid Atlantic coast. Across the NYC metro area and to its interior...enough evaporational and dynamical cooling occurred in a marginally cold environment for precipitation to fall as a heavy wet snow. As low pressure tracked northeast...about 150 miles se of Long Island...a semi-stationary SW to NE band of heavy wet snow stretched from Eastern PA...through interior portions of NE NJ...the lower Hudson Valley...and Southwest Connecticut...and into Central and Western New England. Several hours of 1 to 2 inch per hour snowfall rates of heavy wet snow were experienced under this band...leading to snowfall totals of 12 to 18 inches in this corridor. This band gradually pivoted northeast Saturday night...dropping an additional 1 to 4 inches of snow in its path as it did so.
