  THE CT DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY HAS CONFIRMED A TORNADO NEAR
  3 MILES SOUTH OF SHELTON IN FAIRFIELD COUNTY CONNECTICUT ON JULY 31
  2009.
  
  A NARROW PATH OF WIND DAMAGE EXTENDED ALONG THE YUTAKA TRAIL NEAR
  KANUNGUM TRAIL AND AGAWAM TRAIL TO LONG HILL AVENUE NEAR POCHONG
  TRAIL. THE MOST CONCENTRATED WIND DAMAGE WAS ALONG THE ORONOGUE
  TRAIL...WHERE MANY TREES WERE DOWNED.

  MICROBURST /STRAIGHT LINE WIND DAMAGE/ NEAR NAUGATUCK IN NEW HAVEN
  COUNTY CT ON JUL 31 2009.
  
  SPOTTER REPORTS INDICATE DOWNED TREES NEAR THE OFF/ON RAMPS OF EXIT
  25 ON ROUTE 8 NORTH...EXTENDING EAST FOR ABOUT 200 YARDS TO NEAR A
  COMMUTER PARKING LOT ON CROSS STREET AND ONTO ANDRASKO ROAD.
  DOWNED TREES NEAR THE ROUTE 8 RAMPS WERE FACING TOWARD THE NORTH
  AND NORTHWEST...WHILE THOSE NEAR THE PARKING LOT AND ON ANDRASKO
  ROAD WERE ORIENTED EAST AND SOUTHEAST. SOME HEALTHY TREES IN THE
  DAMAGE AREA WERE SNAPPED ABOUT ONE-THIRD OF THE WAY DOWN FROM THE
  TOP. THIS DAMAGE IS INDICATIVE OF A MICROBURST WITH ESTIMATED
  MAXIMUM WINDS OF ABOUT 95 MPH. A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING AND
  TORNADO WARNING WERE BOTH IN EFFECT AT THE TIME OF THE MICROBURST.

  A MICROBURST IS A CONVECTIVE DOWNDRAFT WITH AN AFFECTED OUTFLOW AREA
  OF LESS THAN 2 1/2 MILES WIDE AND PEAK WINDS LASTING LESS THAN
  5 MINUTES. MICROBURSTS MAY INDUCE DANGEROUS HORIZONTAL/VERTICAL
  WIND SHEARS...WHICH CAN ADVERSELY AFFECT AIRCRAFT PERFORMANCE AND
  CAUSE PROPERTY DAMAGE. MICROBURSTS CAN CAUSE THE SAME DEGREE OF
  DAMAGE AS TORNADOES...WHICH IS WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO SEEK SHELTER
  DURING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNINGS AS YOU WOULD FOR TORNADO

  LONG FROM NEAR COPSE TRAIL EAST-SOUTHEAST TO HULL ROAD BETWEEN ACORN
  AND SAXON ROADS. DOWNED TREES ON WELLSWEEP DRIVE WERE STREWN IN MULTIPLE
  DIRECTIONS IN A PATTERN INDICATIVE OF A TORNADO. SNAPPED AND UPROOTED
  HARDWOOD TREES WERE ALSO INDICATIVE OF MAXIMUM WIND SPEEDS AROUND 100
  MPH...OR EF1 ON THE ENHANCED FUJITA SCALE.
