What is the workshop about?
Emergency Management along the I-95 Corridor from
Boston to Washington D.C. has many unique challenges not seen in other parts of the country.  A wide range of weather hazards are possible in this area, which adds to the complexity.  This workshop will focus on the use, reliability, and possible improvements for Decision Support weather products and services.  Ultimately, the goal is to better understand where we (the National Weather Service Forecast Offices of New York, Boston/Taunton, Philadelphia/Mt Holly, and Baltimore/Washington D.C) fit in for planning and response to events of local, state, regional, and national scales.

When is it being held?
November 18-19 2009

Where is it taking place?
National Weather Service Office, New York will be hosting this conference, which will be held at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL)
Brookhaven Center (BLDG 30) across from the Police Station.  BNL is located about 65 miles east of NYC, near the “Pine Barrens” of Long Island.  This state of the art lab supports Department Of Energy research and technology development through leading edge user facilities.

What are the objectives of the workshop?
To clearly demonstrate the current and planned abilities of the NWS in terms of Decision Support.
To learn what Emergency Managers need in terms of weather support for both weather and non-weather related events.
To gauge where the NWS “fits in” in terms of planning for and response to both weather and non-weather related events.

Who will be attending?

How can you participate?
The four National Weather Service Forecast Offices (NWSFO) that serve this area (Boston, New York City, Philadelphia/Mount Holly, and Baltimore/Washington) are soliciting presentations from Emergency Managers who utilize NWS
information for decision making.  An overview of NWS Decision Support Services will be presented, but more importantly, we’d like to hear from you.  To help us better serve you, we’d like you to address the following questions as part of a presentation or discussion during the conference:

What are your real needs for weather support?
What do you use now (with regard to the weather/DSS)?
What would you like to have that you don’t have now?
What are some critical weather thresholds (rainfall rates/wind speeds/other)?
What might be significant to your operations, but not obvious to us?
Do you have specific threshold events that would necessitate on-site support?

If you’re interested in participating in this conference, please RSVP to your respective point of contact listed below by Friday, September 28th.  Please address any concerns such as technology requirements.
