NOAA's National Weather Service (NWS) is a government agency which is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which is part of the United States Department of Commerce (DOC). Our office is one of 123 NWS forecast offices throughout the nation. Additionally, the NWS includes the National Centers for Environmental Prediction, which is divided among severe weather, tropical weather, ocean weather, and aviation weather, among other operations; River Forecast Centers; and Center Weather Service Units to assist the FAA with forecasting at the nation's air traffic control centers.

The mission of the National Weather Service is to provide weather, hydrologic, and climate forecasts and warnings for the United States, its territories, adjacent waters and ocean areas, for the protection of life and property and the enhancement of the national economy.

Our office is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week to provide timely and accurate forecasts and warnings. The office is located on North Carolina State University's Centennial Campus in Raleigh, N.C. The National Weather Service has been in existence in the Raleigh-Durham area since January 1887. The office has resided in several locations around Raleigh including the N.C. Experiment Farm, downtown Raleigh, two periods at the Raleigh-Durham Airport, and currently at Centennial Campus.
