NWS Raleigh Local Model

4km ARW

4km WRF-ARW, run at 00z, 06z, 12z and 18z out to 24 hours, using 12km NAM initial/boundary conditions.

The Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) Version 3 is a mesoscale numerical weather prediction (NWP) model run at the NWS Raleigh four times a day. Our model configuration is a 4km WRF-ARW run at 00z, 06z, 12z, and 18z out to 24 hours, using 12km NAM initial/boundary conditions. The 4km WRF-ARW model run output is available at approximately 2 AM, 8 AM, 2 PM, AND 8 PM.

We expect to use the model in both an operational and research capacity to help refine phenomena related to smaller scale weather events that are common to our area. In addition, the model will allow us to produce and examine model fields that are not readily available to support operational needs as well as research and collaborative projects. Finally, we expect that the overall knowledge and understanding of how numerical weather prediction models (NWP) operate will increase, resulting in improved NWP utilization at our office.

This is an experimental project. It may not always be available or may be changed without notice to support local research and model experimentation.

Special thanks to Bob Rozumalski who provided the WRF-EMS modeling package and the NWS Baltimore/Washington for their assistance in the development of the RAH-WRF and this webpage.
